Fire Safety Violations In Commercial Buildings
1) Blocked Doors Preventing a Safe Exit
Many people do not realize that having a box or storing a few extra things near the door is a violation. It is very easy to just put something down and then forget or for things to accumulate quickly.
2) Faulty Emergency Exit Lighting
A workplace must have at least 2 exit routes to allow prompt evacuation of employees and other occupants. More exits are required if the number of employees or size of the building will not allow them to evacuate safely.
3) Untested Fire Alarm Systems and Smoke Detectors
The NFPA requires that fire alarms are required to be inspected at least once a year by a trained professional, but suggests you have them done twice a year.

4) Extension Cords in Long-Term Use
Extension cords should only be used short term. They should be thoroughly inspected for damage or alterations. It is recommended to keep a log of the equipment and cords being used.
5) Missing or Damaged Fire Extinguishers
Violations occur when fire extinguishers are blocked from view, improperly mounted or there is not a records log of monthly inspections.
6) Mismatched Sprinkler Systems
This usually occurs when people try to “fix” an issue on their own. OSHA also prohibits employers from hanging anything from sprinklers, or using paint or sealant that can clog the waterspouts

7) Using Fire Pump or Riser Rooms as Storage Closets
A fire pump or riser room is a space dedicated to just that. Nothing else should be in that area.
8) Hanging Items from Fire Sprinklers and Piping
Similar to number 6, hanging anything from or obstructing a sprinkler is a definite violation. You should also avoid hanging anything from the pipes.
9) Blocked Outdoor Fire Department Connections and Valves
You must maintain a clear path from where the fire department needs to be. There cannot be objects such as trees, dumpsters pallets or any other items in the way.
10) Not Keeping Proper Records
You are required to maintain ALL written records of services, maintenance and inspections.
